Authentic Confederate currency bills in good condition are highly sought after by currency collectors who pay a premium for crisper, uncirculated notes. Counterfeit currency bills often appear identical to their genuine counterparts and are bought and sold at a much lower value.

As a certified currency dealer, the knowledgeable currency buyers at PGS Gold & Coin will verify the authenticity of your Confederate bills & other old paper money, evaluate the condition of each currency note, and provide you with an honest & accurate currency appraisal.

When the Confederacy seceded from the Union in 1861, it immediately began issuing paper currency. The Confederacy struck no coinage so paper money was the staple of everyday commerce. Between 1861-1865, the Confederate States of America (CSA) issued over 100 varieties of paper currency. Today there are many genuine notes that are attainable and affordable to collectors, and of course, still other Confederate currency specimens exist that are very rare and extremely valuable.

Confederate Paper Money, Confederate CurrencyConfederate currency -or Civil War money as it is often called, is colorful and historically important. Many examples of CSA currency feature ornately designed vignettes of Confederate heroes, buildings, and scenes of the time, issued from historic places like Richmond, Virginia, New Orleans, Louisiana, & Montgomery, Alabama. Currency collectors have nicknames for specific Confederate currency notes with names like Black Eagle, funny back, greenback, Lincoln porthole, Washington porthole, and “Educationals”.

Confederate currency was printed in a range of sizes including small size Fractional Currency notes to the large-sized “horse blanket” notes.

Confederate paper money is very collectible in today’s market, especially the more rare notes in uncirculated condition. However, much of the Confederate money we see is actually fake – counterfeit. Confederate money has been counterfeited and reproduced for more than a century but there are still plenty of valuable old paper money notes, like Civil War Era money and Confederate currency that’s still waiting to be discovered!
